Tech Report: How A Fashion Blogger Stays Connected

By  |  0 Comments

If you’ve ever wondered how your favourite fashion bloggers stay one step ahead of the trends then we’re going to let you in on a few of their best-kept secrets. We all know that the digital world moves at lightening speed so the first step in staying connected is nabbing the latest and greatest technology. At the moment I’m using a Samsung Galaxy TabS2 and Samsung Galaxy S6 phone to help me stay on top of my game. Both of these devices are sleek and sexy and give me all the firepower I need to blog anywhere in the world at any time of the day. They also both come equipped with incredible cameras which is an absolutely must for me.

So while you may not be planning on becoming New Zealand’s next biggest fashion blogger, there’s nothing stopping you from borrowing a few trusty tricks of the trade to help you stay connected in style.

Now staying connected can be easier said than done sometimes and because no-one likes chewing through expensive data jumping online you’ll need to know where and how to find free WiFi no matter where you are in the world. So before you do anything, download the WiFi Finder app and stop spending all your hard-earned cash just getting online.

PRO TIP  The Samsung Galaxy TabS2 has a slot for an SD card which means you can easily increase your storage in an instant.

Now if you’ve ever wondered how fashion bloggers and fashion editors seem to have a knack for knowing what’s in fashion before it’s actually even in the stores there’s a simple reason for this. Designers show their collections on the runways up to a year ahead of time so the fashionistas get a sneaky 12-months head start on the rest of us. So while Taro cards may be one way of predicting the future, when it comes to fashion, finding out what trends are heading our way is actually quite a lot easier.

Vogue is still the world leader in high fashion and will give you access to international runway shows but you’ll need to tune into the ready-to-wear collections instead of the high-end couture collections for wearable fashion inspo. Once upon a time fashion editors would jump on a plane to attend the shows but now we can all view them by downloading a couple of handy apps and live streaming the shows from our devices. Pretty simple huh? You’ll need the Italian Vogue app and the French Vogue app for starters; and don’t worry if your language skills are lacking – unlike their print companions these apps are both in English.

PRO TIP  The Samsung Galaxy TabS2 has the best speed you can get in a mobile device and makes Internet browsing an absolute breeze.

Now it’s time to plug those key fashion week dates into your calendar. A go-to resource for fashion media and a website definitely worth bookmarking is Fashion Week Online. This website is a one-stop fashion week resource, with live streams from the Big 4 fashion weeks (New York, London, Milan, Paris) private runway shows, interviews with fashion influencers, designers, stylists and models. So grab your device, and lock those key dates into your calendar now.

PRO TIP  The Samsung Galaxy TabS2 comes with an AllShare Play feature that lets you watch the movies you’ve downloaded on your Samsung TV with the simple ‘push to watch’ option.

Find personal style bloggers who resonate with you and start reading their blogs regularly. The easiest way to follow a number of blogs is via a site like Bloglovin’. Bloglovin’ will help you discover new blogs and notifies you when one of your favourite bloggers has posted something new. It’s a huge timesaver because you no longer need to trawl through lots of different blogs searching for what’s new. You simply add them on Bloglovin’ and sit back and wait for the notifications to roll in.

Streamlining your gear is essential to staying connected when you’re out and about. You definitely don’t want to be carrying every piece of technology you own in your handbag – I’ve done that and it isn’t fun. My trusty tablet comes everywhere with me these days because it takes amazing photos, is large enough to read websites and watch runway shows, is light-weight and even allows me to actually blog on the run thanks to the WordPress app. A wireless charger is also a great idea to avoid getting caught short and out of battery.

There are a few must-have apps that every fashionista worth her salt has uploaded on her phone. They are:

1) The Hunt
Dying to know where your favourite fashion blogger got the outfit she’s wearing on Instagram? If you’ve ever seen a picture of an outfit that you love but don’t know where to purchase, this app allows users to post ‘hunts’ to help you find what you’re looking for. It’s a bit like the Shazam of the fashion world only its other members who help you find what you’re looking for by posting direct shopping links as well as chic shopping alternatives. The app also allows users to follow trending hunts and shop trending products which is a great way to keep up with what’s hot and what’s not in fashion.

2) Polyvore
Polypore is a great app for style inspiration because it let’s you create shoppable collages by mixing and matching products. You can create your own stylish outfit collages and you can also search through collages created by others.

3) Stylekick
Stylekick’s personal shopping app lets you shop directly from your favorite street style photos featured in the inspiration feed. The app will even recommend outfits and pieces for you to shop based on your personal style and interests. You can upload your own street style pictures for style feedback and the best bit is you can meet and chat with other like-minded style bloggers and fashion lovers.

PRO TIP  The Samsung Galaxy TabS2 has a snappy feature that allows you to turn your tablet into a TV remote – yes truly! All your TV channels can be easily accessed on it and viewed on your TV screen with a single touch. Winning!

Finally, never underestimate the power of Pinterest for curating great style inspiration. Fashion bloggers generally create mood boards each season to collate looks they love and to help plan their purchases. Pinterest is also a great way to revisit old pieces you have in your wardrobe and give them a style update.

And or course fashion magazines are always fun for a quick flick and for some old-school fashion inspo.
