5 Top Tips For Styling Your Home

With the cooler months upon us, our seasonal stylist Sonia Watts – founder, designer and head buyer for French Country Collections – shares her top tips for creating a wonderful Winter haven in your home.

Winter is about a feeling as much as a look. It’s about comfort, warmth and luxuriousness.  When the weather cools, our homes come in to their own and with a few simple changes or new pieces, you can update your look to create a warm, inviting space.

HOW TO CREATE A WARM INVITING HOME

Introduce softer, warmer colours and textiles: Replace brighter summer colours with a softer, more muted palette. Think apricots, silvery greys and very soft citrus shades. These colours marry in so well with on-trend metallics like copper, which is still big news in interiors. Textiles play a huge part in the winter theme, particularly bedding. I like to go for luxuriousness and glamour when the temperature drops, so satin cotton sheets replace the crisp cotton sheets I favour in warmer months and beautiful velvet quilts and comforters make an appearance. Think about mixing and matching different textures too, so a beautiful silvery grey velvet quilt with a woollen rabbit pom pom throw complemented by the shine of a copper bedside lamp. The look is luxurious but also very tactile and cocooning.

Mood lighting: Lighting plays a huge role in winter. There is nothing nicer than walking into someone’s home to be greeted by candlelight. As well as candles, think about using halogen lighting instead of bright lights – it emits a much softer, warm glow similar to candlelight.

Create a cozy reading nook: Set aside a space in your home to create your own winter library, or if space is an issue, a reading nook. Start with a comfortable chair – natural fabrics such as soft leather work well for this – and accessorise it with woolen or fur throws or cushions. Furs continue to be big news and are still going strong in the Northern Hemisphere summer season! Our Mongolian furs are my must-have pick this winter. Antlers and faux trophy heads still have a place in interiors, and winter is when they come in to their own. Antlers are also great for hanging your hat and scarf in winter.

Entertain with a sense of the unexpected: I love entertaining in winter, and most of all I love to surprise my guests with quirky and unexpected table settings. I find predictability a bit boring! Ceramics are dear to my heart and I love to mix and match dinnerware and even glassware with different colours, styles and sizes. I also like to place beautiful ceramics and cutlery directly on to my old wooden dining table – don’t feel the need to always use placemats or tablecloths. Place flowers in odd vases right down the centre of the table and of course, make sure you use lots of candles in a range of sizes too.

Update your home fragrance collection: Smell plays a big part in creating a mood for winter, so change out your fresh and sharp room diffusers from summer with softer, sensuous perfumes with notes of vanilla, amber and sandalwood.
