Cider is my favourite summer go-to drink. There’s something about a delicious, bubbly cider that really hits the spot on a hot day. And while a trusty cheese platter will always be a crowd pleaser, there’s a host of unexpected cider-friendly snacks that are sure to take your cider-drinking to the next level.  Check out my tried-and-tested favourites below.

CINNAMON DONUTS

This has to be the easiest, not to mention tastiest, way to enjoy a crisp, cold cider. The cinnamon and nutmeg in doughnuts work really well with cider and like most fried foods, need a mouth-wateringly good bubbly drink to wash them down. If you want to make your own donuts then Baker Bettie has a fab recipe for baked (mini) donuts that are sure to be a tad healthier but if you’re after a quick fix then store bought donuts will do the job.

GINGERBREAD

Along with cinnamon and nutmeg, ginger is another spice that apples absolutely love. A delicious slice of Gingerbread Loaf Cake served with coconut butter and washed down with a cold cider is hard to beat. If you’re looking for a great Gingerbread Loaf Cake recipe then we can definitely recommend this one over at I Heart Eating

PRETZEL TRAIL MIX
A bowl of salty pretzels will bring out the sweetness of your cider but if you want to up the ante then mix your favourite pretzels with some fresh herbs, nuts and spices to create a tasty home-made Pretzel Trail Mix. If you need some inspiration then take a look at this easy trail mix recipe over at Eat Yourself Skinny

GROWN-UP GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES

Grown-Up Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are a cross between a cheese toastie and a BLT. They’re easy to whip up, look impressive and the gooey, warm melted cheese goes down a treat with a sweet apple cider. Cooking Light has a great recipe to get you started but don’t overthink this one – just add some fresh veggies, bacon and cheese to your sammie and start toasting.

STICKY PORK RIBS
There’s a reason why nana always served apple sauce with her roast pork – put simply, it works! And that’s exactly why cider is the perfect drink to accompany finger-licking-good pork ribs. For a super-simple and delicious ribs recipe visit Food In A Minute

CHEESY APPLE STICKS

We’ve possibly left the best ’til last here because once you’ve tried these little mouth-watering morsels you’ll find yourself whipping them up all the time. I usually use a smokey Gouda cheese when I make them because the smokey flavour really complements the sweetness of the apple.
