Paper trail

While these beautiful cocktail dresses look runway-ready they are in fact made entirely from (how can I put this?) well . . . toilet paper.

Yes it’s hard to believe but it’s true.  These three amazing dresses have been chosen as finalists in the Kleenex Cottonelle Paper Dresses Challenge. Now challenge is most definitely the operative word here. The mind boggles at the thought of creating such chic creations out of a humble roll of loo paper.

But talented NZ Fashion Tech students Kapiliola Fonua, Tanya Jeffrey and Kei Ho did just that.

The judging panel of Zambesi’s Liz Findlay, fashion photographer Marissa Findlay, NZ Fashion Tech Director Kevin Smith and Michele Bollinger and Deb Bauer from Kimberly-Clark narrowed the initial field of designs (that used 19,500 metres of toilet paper) from 34 diploma students, but the winner will be decided by you.

Voting is now open at to decide who will lead 2012’s Paper Dresses into the opening Designer Selection show at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland on September 4.

Everyone who votes has the chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to Fashion Weekend including flights to Auckland, accommodation at the Hilton Hotel on Auckland’s waterfront, tickets to New Zealand Fashion Weekend, tickets to the Designer Selection show and $500 spending money.

Entries close on Monday 26th August at 11.59pm.

So what are you waiting for?
