Pamper your hair

I was recently invited to get some hair-pampering from hairdressing guru Mana Dave at his brand new salon-with-a-difference Pony Professionnel in Auckland’s Newmarket.

Not one to turn down a bit of pampering I headed over to meet Mana Dave and find out what all the fuss was about.

When I said that Pony Professionnel is a salon with a difference I really meant it. You won’t see any cutting or colouring going down there. The salon is all about prescribing the perfect products for your hair and treating your tresses to some much-needed TLC.

I love this idea because whenever I’m faced with a wall of fancy haircare products I usually go straight for the bottles that look and smell the best. Which ultimately means my hair doesn’t get the love it needs. So at Pony Professionnel the team is trained to diagnose your hair’s needs and prescribe the best products for you.

Before my treatment my hair had to be photographed  – yes you heard it right. Your scalp, mid lengths and ends are photographed with a camera that magnifies them by 300 percent. Yikes. It was at this point I remembered the notice that had come home from my son’s school about an outbreak of nits in his class. I was panicking that the magnified photo of my scalp would show a family of tiny creatures doing their own little gangnam style dance moves in my hair. Fortunately that wasn’t the case but the pictures did show that I had a little bit of sensitivity (red patches) on my scalp and some dry, flaky spots too.

The moment of truth – Me photographing my hair being photographed (hope that makes sense).

The pictures meant that the team could accurately diagnose exactly what my hair needed. This was my personalised prescription for healthy hair (above).

After your hair has been “diagnosed” (it only takes a few minutes) you head out the back to a lovely sanctuary of quiet to enjoy your treatment and scalp massage. It was absolute bliss.

Then my hair was blowdried and styled and I left with the silkiest hair I have ever had.

That’s me (above) being photographed by my six-year-old son who thought it was hillarious taking pictures of his mum.

There’s a huge range of brands available at Pony Professionnel including Kerastase, LʼOreal, Pureology, Redken, Matrix, Biolage, Phylia de M (exclusive to Pony Professionnel), Morrocan Oil, Davines, Kevin Murphy, Sebastian, ghd and Sans.

They even sell great hair products that I haven’t been able to find anywhere else like these must-have hair donuts (below) for creating the perfect bun. You may have seen my sock bun video here. Well these donuts are even better than a sock but are usually too hard to find.

A premium Kerastase hair spa treatment ranges from $87 – $185 (for two hours) and uses massage techniques designed specifically for your needs. You’ll definitely leave feeling relaxed and indulged and your hair will feel and look amazing. If you’re in a hurry, Pony Professionnelʼs on-the-go dry style and blow dry services are priced from only $40.

Pony Professionnel is now open at 290b Broadway, Newmarket (opposite Morrow Street).
