Move over balayage – layage is the new way to highlight hair for 2016.

The new technique is being hailed as balayage but better and basically involves hand painting colour onto hair on a large flat surface giving hair a natural-looking colour.

The idea is that it allows colour to merge more subtly than balayage – a French word meaning to sweep or to paint.

Creative manager and colour expert Katie Allan pioneered the technique at The House of Charles Worthington in Covent Garden.

She told the Daily Mail that the technique can only really work on hair that falls below the collar bone.

‘Layage is a much more controlled method than the traditional balayage technique and allows you to see every strand of hair fluently, providing more precision to this colour technique.’

We love the pretty ombre effect that layage gives and we’re keen to find a salon in New Zealand that performs this colouring technique so if you know one we’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
