No Gym? No Worries. Get Fit For Free!

If you want to get fit and healthy but don’t have the means or desire to join a gym then I may have found the perfect solution. Each week Nike run free training sessions based on their popular N+TC workouts and this week I went in to downtown Auckland to check it out.

I don’t know about you, but I reckon it’s always a little intimidating joining any sort of fitness group – especially if you’re feeling  . . . unfit! And that was exactly how I was feeling on Monday night when I showed up. In fact, I almost didn’t go at all. Not only am I really unfit at the moment but I’d twisted my ankle the day before playing basketball in Birkenstocks (don’t ask) so I was hardly in good shape to take on a group of uber fit gym junkies. As it turned out I needn’t have worried. For starters not everyone was uber fit – phew. In fact, they were a group of really cool girls of all different fitness levels and they were all kind and supportive which was exactly what I needed.

The motto of the Nike Training Club (which happens all over the world by the way – not just Auckland) says it all really: We work it whenever, wherever, always together. Sometimes out of breath, never out of style. We are Nike Training Club.

I was a lot out of breath but I wasn’t the only one and best of all I was having fun.

We started our session off with a short warm up run along Auckland’s waterfront. If you’re not a runner it doesn’t matter because there is also a power walking group. Then we headed back to Britomart, grabbed a workout mat and were guided through a series of exercises by Nike trainer and all round cool girl Jade Palmer. Working out in the fresh air and evening sunshine was awesome. By the end of the session I felt tired and invigorated all at once and I’ll definitely be back next week. If you’re in Auckland why don’t you come down and join me?

Here’s a little snapshot of Lydia O’Donnell and some of the girls working out together on Monday night.
