Friday On My Mind

In a former life I edited a number of really cool magazines and I’ve got to say one of the trickiest parts of editing a magazine is writing an editor’s letter each month. Even after years on the job it didn’t get any easier.

I always struggled to strike a balance between including enough personal stuff in my ed’s letter without too much.

It’s human nature to think that no-one is really interested in what we’ve got to say but over the years I realised the more I shared in those ed’s letters the more I got to know the readers and the more I realized that people do care and it’s the only way you can really get to know someone.

That’s why I’ve decided to start a weekly editor’s letter here.  I really want to share with you what I’m thinking and feeling and some of the cool stuff that goes on behind the scenes here. I’m hoping you’ll do the same with me too.

It’s been a while since I’ve done this so I’m sure to be a little rusty. The last ed’s letter I wrote was over 18-months ago when I signed off after five years as editor of The Australian Women’s Weekly mag – seems like a lifetime ago now.

Anyway, here goes.

Getting back to work this week was made a whole lot easier when the team at Wella invited me to trial their new Color.id at Toni & Guy Ponsonby.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Salt water and chlorine had taken their toll on my poor locks over the holiday and my dreaded regrowth was staring to rear its ugly head too!

In a nutshell the new color system is designed to create different tones in your hair without the stylist needing to use foils. So basically that means it’s quicker and easier than ever before to get multi tonal locks. Because I like having a little light and dark in my hair it’s perfect for me.

I’m in love with the result but as I was sitting in the mirror waiting for the color to do its thing I couldn’t help wondering why I always look so ugly when I look at myself in the mirror at the hairdressers. It’s the same at any hairdressing salon I’ve ever visited.

As soon as I sit down at the salon mirror it’s like . . . waaaaaahhhhh! What’s with this? As soon as I get back into my car I seem to look “normal” again (but with much better hair) but I’ve never been able to put my finger on why I always look so blah at the hairdressers. Does this ever happen to you or is it just me?

A little retail therapy (ooops!) has also helped me ease back into work this week. I picked up this cute little cacti (below) for my desk and scored the bargain of the century at the Topshop sale – a genuine leather biker jacket for $112 (reduced from $450). It makes my heart skip a beat just thinking about that bargain. Oh and as of yesterday they still had a few left!

This year you can also expect to see some new faces here at The Style Insider. Our team is growing and I’ll be able to introduce you to our new columnists very soon. So watch this space for updates – I’m sure you’re going to love hearing from these uber cool gals.

I also thought I’d share with you my favourite outfit that I’m wearing at the moment (more like all the time). I’m a terrible creature of habit and when I strike on something that I like and it works for me I wear it and wear it and wear it. Anyone else like that?
That’s why I decided to share my current fave look with you below and to apologise to the poor people around me who have had to see me in this outfit too many times lately.

Promise I’ll come up with a new favourite soon.
