Bold lipstick is one of the best fashion accessories this season.  That’s why we caught up with NZ’s Maybelline New York Makeup artist, Julia O’Neil to find out her top tips on applying bold lippie like a pro.

GET THE LOOK

  • Before applying lipstick, it’s important to use a lip balm as bold colour will highlight any dryness.  Condition your lips well with MNY Baby Lips Loves Colour Lip Balm, $4.29 but make sure it has time to sink in.  You don’t want your lip colour slipping and sliding all over your lips.

  • To wear a bold lip in the day: Dab the lipstick onto the centre of the lips either directly from the bullet or using your fingertips.  Lightly blend the colour outwards and press your lips together for the perfect stain of colour without any smudging.  My favourites are MNY Color Sensational Bold Matte in Mat 4, $19.99 for an orange based red or MNY Color Sensational Vivids Lipstick in Fuchsia Flash, $20.99 for a flattering vibrant pink.

  • For a more intense evening look: it’s hard to beat a classic red lip – for a good base take a lip pencil that is the same shade as the lipstick, such as MNY SuperStay Lip Liner in Red, $18.99, line the edges of your lips and then fill in the entire lip with the pencil.  Apply the lipstick in fine layers either from the bullet or using a lip brush, blotting in between each layer to avoid smudging.

  • For an extra precise lip line blend concealer at the lip edge to create perfect definition.  I’d recommend MNY Color Sensational Bold Matte in Mat 6, $19.99 as a blue based red that always has impact.
