Beauty review: Kiehl’s

I love trialling new products and for the past five weeks I’ve been using a range of Kiehl’s products and they are A-mazing. I’d heard a little bit about the brand but to be honest didn’t know much until I called into Auckland’s new Kiehl’s store in Britomart to find out what all the hype was about. In a nutshell, Kiehl’s has been around for a long time. In fact, it was founded in 1851 in New York City. The Kiehl’s Pharmacy was a respected 19th Century old world apothecary (an old-fashioned name for a pharmacist). The establishment expanded to a full-service pharmacy in 1921, selling homeopathic and herbal remedies, essential oils, over the-counter drugs, teas, honeys, and the first Kiehl’s brand products. Over the years, the Kiehl’s product range has developed and grown and now includes skin care, body care, hair care, women’s and men’s care, baby care and even pet care!

Kiehl’s is a brand with a conscience too (we love that). It’s involved in many philanthropic ventures around the world.

The other thing I love about Kiehl’s is that they are happy to give you product samples to take home and try before you buy. In fact, the Kiehl’s team don’t like anyone leaving the store without getting a free sample – how cool is that?

This quirky little video gives you a quick snapshot of what Kiehl’s is all about.

It’s one thing to love a brand’s philosophy but it’s another to actually see results from the products. I’ve used Kiehl’s exclusively for the past five weeks and this is what I think.

Firstly, I was prescribed the Clearly Corrective White collection because it addresses my pigmentation and also has anti-ageing benefits (never say no to that).

I was told that I wouldn’t really start to see any real results for 28 days because this is the time it takes for your skin to complete a full cycle of dead skin cells being replaced by new ones. When I first started using the range my skin did start to react and I noticed a few breakouts. I think this is because I was using the Skin Brightening Exfoliator and I hadn’t been exfoliating my skin regularly. I was using this product every day but have since reduced this to a couple of times a week and my skin has settled down.

I also think when you change products it can take your skin a little while to adjust to a new regime. I’d also been using the Clarity-Activating Toner – I hadn’t used a toner in years. I’d forgotten how satisfying it is to use a toner though. It really makes your skin feel extra clean and preps it perfectly for the hydrating products that follow.

My favourite product in this range has to be the Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution. It’s basically a silky serum you apply before your moisturiser and it contains a potent formula of Vitamin C, white birch and peony to correct dark spots at a deep level. I’d use the Hydrating Moisture Emulsion to moisturise my skin during the day before apply the Dermatologist Solutions Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF50 PA++++ UVA. I especially loved this product because it gives my skin much needed protection from UVA and UVB rays but doesn’t leave it looking white and pasty under my foundation like many high SPF products do.

I’ve definitely noticed a lightening of my pigmentation and I’m told with continued use of the Clearly Corrective White range these results will continue to improve – yippee! My skin tone is definitely more even and I’ve had no breakouts or congestion for the past few weeks which I’m putting down to regular use of toner and exfoliator. To give my skin extra hydration I also used Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate at night under my moisturiser. I’m totally addicted to this Vitamin C packed product. It’s a creamy consistency but glides on your skin like silk and sort of leaves your skin feeling warm. It’s divine and it’s a product that will now be a permanent fixture in my daily beauty routine.  Would I recommend Kiehl’s Cearly Corrective White range? If you want to fight pesky pigmentation while gaining all the benefits of a potent anti-ageing product then I’d definitely recommend this range. My skin looks and feels amazing and I’m thrilled that my pigmentation is fading.

While I was visiting the Kiehl’s store I couldn’t help but notice this beautiful bottle of Kiehl’s Original Musk eau de toilette. I was first captivated but the old-fashioned bottle and because I’ve always been a fan of musky fragrances I was in love with this from my first whiff. I’m definitely putting this one on my Christmas wish list – if you’re a musk fan you’ll love this too.
