So you’re spending an extra 10 minutes moisturising every morning and still dealing with dry, flaky skin—what gives? It’s not just your beauty routine that needs adjusting this time of year, it’s also your diet.  Here at The Style Insider we’re on a mission to help you nourish your mind, body and soul with thanks to Dove.  So follow these simple steps to give your skin a fighting chance to be the best it can be.

We’ve heard it all before but it’s really important (even at this time of the year) to keep our bodies hydrated by drinking plenty of water.  It’s one of the simplest and best things you can do for your skin – truly!

The best way to protect your skin is to use sunscreen everyday. Use a sunscreen that is a combination sunscreen and moisturiser.  You need to nourish your skin with healthy vitamins and antioxidants, so that while you’re protecting it from the sun, you’ll also receive long-term benefits.

Make sure you exfoliate your skin at least once a week to remove unwanted dead skin that may be clogging your pores.  Removing the dead skin also enables your skincare products to work more efficiently too.

Body oils are a great way to hydrate your entire body.  Get in the habit of applying a good body oil or moisturiser every time you get out of the shower.  A warm shower will open your pores and allow your moisturiser to penetrate more effectively.

Our skin is often a good reflection of how healthy we are on the inside.  So don’t forget to nourish your skin from the inside out.  Add super foods into your daily diet as much as possible and your skin will reward you.

You’re probably not going to stop shaving but have you ever noticed how your underarm skin gets dry and damaged immediately after you shave? Yeah, that’s not a good thing.  Recent Unilever research found that each time you shave under your arms, up to 36 percent of what you shave off is skin. Yikes. Rather than trying to moisturise your pits (can you imagine?), go for protective, non-drying deodorant that will help shield those delicate top layers of skin.

In winter it’s too easy to amp up the temperature of our baths and showers but the hot water strips the natural moisture for our skin.  Take warm showers not hot and if you are going to soak in a hot bath make sure it contains a nourishing body oil to protect your skin.

We all know how tempting it is to hit the hay without taking our makeup off.  But when you sleep in your makeup it’s basically an invitation for wrinkles to have a party on your face.  The reason this happens is because makeup and external pollutants seep into your pores and when left untouched they break down collagen and elastin – the two things that are keeping your skin looking youthful.  So even when it’s late and your super tired make sure you remove your makeup before hopping into bed.

While it’s hard not to attack pimples on your face it’s a real no no because it’s too easy to be over zealous and cause scarring.  Instead give yourself a quick DIY facial using a warm face cloth to encourage the pores of your skin to clear naturally.

10.  AVOID
Foods high in sugar and starch play havoc with your skin.
They increase your blood sugar which can also break down the collagen in your skin which leads to loss of elasticity and premature ageing.  So stick with healthy snacks and pass on the sugary sweets.
